Objectives: This study was conducted for the purpose of suggesting the necessity and direction of family counselor core competency research.
Methods: For this purpose, a review of the literature on counselor development and core competency (CC) was conducted.
Results: Recent research on counselor development have shown more interest in the practical core skills of counselors, which were similar to the CC of counselors. In the United States, discussions on the CC of mental health experts have increased as the need for quality mental health services and outcome-based education has emerged. AAMFT¡¯s CC was developed in 2004 and was followed by the UK¡¯s and Taiwan¡¯s efforts while Korea¡¯s efforts in this field are still limited. In the case of Korea, the research on the CC of individual counselors has been conducted more broadly as, compared to research on the CC of family counselors.
Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest that the CC of family counselors can be utilized more prominently in counselor education, training, evaluation, and standardized qualification processes. Therefore, it is suggested that discussions begin within the professional community regarding the CC of family counselors in Korea.
